Adult Swim

Upfront Party

When Adult Swim parties, they party with giant projection mapped eggs. When they do that, they ask Klip to make it happen.
When Klip makes it happen, they get me to help figure out how.

Process Video

I took CAD files of the stage and projector set ups and translated that into templates for 2d and 3d artists. I also created a matching 3d template to use in TouchDesigner for the live event. In between the technical stuff, I was able to squeeze in a little animation for the show as well. I created some melty paint transitions in Houdini and got to do a little data moshing as well.

I needed both the texture decay and the fracturing simulation to be directable and flexible enough to accommodate feedback from both the creative team as well as the historical consultants. I used Substance Designer to create procedural textures and Houdini for the simulations. Both textures and the simulation were controlled by an animated black and white texture map created in After Effects.

Mark McCallum did the hard stuff taking the 3d template and 2d content and authoring the show in TouchDesigner. Animators at Adult Swim and some really talented freelance cell animators handled all the 2d character animation. Klip did the rest. Oh, and Niki Minaj performed at the party too. I didn’t get to go, but it was probably past my bedtime anyway.
